Note from blogmaster:  I got this article from Ira Marxe at Good Health Supplements***.  I've been extremely concerned about GMO technology since the beginning.  What disturbs me most is that, if we don't stop this, we may end up with nothing but GMO foods to eat.  This is why.....if farmers are allowed (and they already are, by the way) to grow genetically modified food, from GMO seed then wind and rain can carry those fake seeds into other gardens.  From what I've read, this can end up causing natural plants not to germinate correctly.  Eventually, we might end up with a world where the actual food that we grow is controlled by our government and nothing we eat is real.  Does that sound appetizing to you?  It certainly doesn't to me.  Please educate yourself about GMO foods.  They are not the answer.  Support your organic farmer and those companies that care about your health.  They are our future, nutritionally speaking.

Health Matter Minutes:

Genetically Modified Corn...How It Can Affect Your Health

by Ira Marxe from Good Health Supplements, makers of GHS Plus

I remember the days when you could shop at your grocer or fruit and vegetable market and come away comfortably knowing that the food you bought was healthy food.

Unfortunately, not so today.

So many of our foods are processed to death, contain trans-fats, hormones, anti-biotics or are filled with preservatives, chemical food colors (even in farmed salmon), insecticides, or other chemical additives whose names you can’t even pronounce.

In recent years we have had another scrooge added to the list, and that is "GMO"  or Genetically Modified Organism or Genetic Engineering of the seeds that grow our crops. This new approach to greater crop yield is spearheaded by the giant Monsanto Chemical Co.

Now the theory behind GMO may be very sound, but the results are downright life threatening and of course Monsanto and bioengineers will deny that. Monsanto like Big Pharma, will do most anything to protect their big profits from their patented products.

It is well know that there are many warranted concerns about the safety of genetically modified food crops and recently new concerns erupted about the safety of GMO corn after The Independent, a London newspaper stated that Monsanto Co. discovered its GMO corn had potentially harmful effects on rats in a privately conducted test, but didn’t disclose the information.

It should be noted that nothing about the Monsanto report has been published by the main stream media in the U.S. Typical, right?

When presented with this disclosure, Monsanto spokesman Chris Horner said the information about the effects of GMO corn on rats was not published because it contains sensitive business material that Monsanto did not want competitors to access. But for those already wary of the effects of GMO crops, Monsanto’s defense is a sad joke.

Here’s what Craig Winters, president of The Campaign, a political advocacy group for the labeling of GMO foods had to say, “That’s what you have a patent for,” to protect yourself against competitors. Winters also said there was no good reason for Monsanto to keep from publishing the research, which The Independent said found differences in kidney size and blood composition in rats fed the GMO corn.

The study clearly showed that some rats fed on genetically modified maize had smaller kidneys and variations in the composition of their blood, while the rats fed on normal maize were healthy. This was mentioned clearly in the 1,139 pages confidential report prepared by Monsanto.

Monsanto holds that since regulating authorities, who decide whether or not to allow the sale of the GMO corn, have seen the entire report, there is no reason to make the report public. But Winters said this event points to a need to re-evaluate the GM crop approval process, which does not require any third-party testing or safety approval in the United States. That’s scary!

“Monsanto’s statement that nine global authorities have approved the genetically engineered corn is not really an assurance that adequate safety studies have been done,” said Winters. “Moreover, it appears that Monsanto’s own internal studies on this genetically engineered corn give significant cause for concern.”

Katherine DiMatteo, executive director of the Organic Trade Association, said this is just one more piece of evidence in the arsenal against genetic engineering. She agreed with Winters that it furthers the argument for improving the process of approving GMO crops for production in the United States. “All these things will come together to the point where the consumer can no longer ignore it,” said DiMatteo. “It’s unfortunate that we have to go through this over and over, since we don’t use the precautionary principle (in approving GMO crops).”

Controversy over the unreleased research comes as the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol summit meets in Montreal to discuss issues of GMO labeling and liability. Though Monsanto’s GMO corn is in production in the United States, the European Union has not yet agreed to approve it. Smart people.

It is obvious that genetically modified foods are not as safe as the policy makers and scientists are busy telling us.

Other documents have revealed that many of the rats that ate genetically engineered tomatoes developed lesions in their stomachs. For unknown reasons, researchers did not examine tissues elsewhere in the digestive tract. They also did not provide an explanation as to why seven of the forty rats that were fed with GMO tomatoes died unexpectedly within two weeks.

Questions with regard to human safety and genetically modified foods have been previously raised many times. In one example, in October 2003, at least 100 residents of a far-flung village in Polomolok town, South Cotabato, in the Philippines, complained of various illnesses. Food specimens drawn from the affected region allegedly showed the presence of Bt toxins.

Bt maize, a genetically modified maize variety containing a gene from the bacteria --Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) -- was approved for commercial planting in the Philippines in 2002. Samples taken by a Norwegian Institute did show that Bt toxins were allegedly found on the specimens of those tested. But this too was angrily contested by the biotechnology industry and the report was unscientifically dumped.

This reminds of the earlier efforts to crush the damming evidence provided by Dr. Arpad Puztai. His conclusion that rats fed on genetically modified potatoes suffered serious damages to their immune system had set the biotechnology industry into an uproar. Instead of examining the scientific findings, the scientific community led by the Royal Society in England banned together to discredit Dr Puztai.

In another experiment, researchers at the University of Cornell in America observed that the caterpillars of monarch butterfly when fed with genetically modified corn suffered varying degrees of ailments, and were crawling more slowly than usual. Scientists concluded that 44 per cent of the caterpillars died after being fed continuously with the GMO corn pollens. None of those exposed to non-GMO corn suffered. Those fed on normal corn pollen turned into butterflies.

There are many more such reports out there and new ones probably on the way. When you fool with nature you are treading on dangerous grounds but people like Monsanto and Big Pharma could care less. Their primary interest is in developing patentable product which produce billions in profits and the public be damned!

Ask you grocer about GMO foods. If he says yes, don’t buy them and make a protest.

No one can protect you like you yourself. Some letters to your congress persons also wouldn’t hurt. Bear in mind that the bulk of the average politician’s money support comes from these giant food companies and Big Pharma. But that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t vote for them. Your votes mean more than their money. You need to let the politicians know that.
